What Is a Primary Election?

...and why is it important?

In a primary election (May 21, 2024), voters choose which candidate from their political party will move forward to run in the general election (November 5, 2024). This is important because it allows the people to choose a nominee from each party to represent them in the general election.

The deadline to switch parties has passed already. If you are not registered, you can still register to vote in this years primary until April 22. Go to my website, www.VoteJulieCantwell.com, scroll down and click the ‘VOTER INFO’ tab. There, you can register to vote, check your registration status, find polling locations, view a sample ballot, etc.

In Kentucky, we have closed primaries, meaning only registered Republicans vote in the Republican primary and registered Democrats vote in the Democratic primary. The winners of the primary election move on to compete against each other in the general election in November. The winner of the general election will begin their term on January 1, 2025. In my case, since I’m running for the Kentucky House of Representatives, if elected, I will serve a two-year term.
